An Ingham County seat with its own rules

Mason is the Ingham County seat, which makes it the only town on our run with a courthouse square at the middle of it. The practical consequence is a dense ring of nineteenth-century housing and commercial buildings around that square, on streets platted long before anybody imagined a roll-off truck.

It also means a different set of offices from everything else we deliver to. The City of Mason handles its own streets; outside the city it is the township or the Ingham County road department. Nothing about that is difficult, but it is not the Jackson County phone call, and the application is yours rather than ours — permits go to the property owner or the contractor, never to the hauler.

On your own driveway, as everywhere, you need nothing at all. In the blocks right around the square, where drives are short and single-width, the kerb comes up more often than you would like, so it is worth asking before you plan the job.

Courthouse-square commercial work

Mason's square is a working commercial street, and the fit-out and turnover work that comes with it is a real share of what we deliver into the city. Those jobs have constraints a residential delivery does not.

Access is usually from a rear service lane shared between several buildings, so placement becomes a conversation with the neighbours as well as with us. A container that narrows a shared lane for a week is tolerable if people know, and a serious nuisance if they do not. We would far rather plan a container that goes in Monday and out Wednesday than one that sits awkwardly for ten days.

Upper floors are the other feature. Most of these buildings have storage or apartments above the shop reached by one narrow stair, and clearing them is a materials-handling problem before it is a container problem. Stage everything at ground level first, then load in one organised pass. And treat the buildings as old: assume asbestos in floor tile, pipe wrap and mastic until it is tested.

North end of the run, which helps with timing

Mason sits on the US-127 corridor north of Jackson, and it pairs with Leslie on the northern part of our delivery day. That is useful to know, because it is the main thing that decides whether we can get to you quickly.

We route by geography rather than by order of booking — a truck criss-crossing three counties in a day delivers fewer containers and arrives late everywhere. So the answer to “can you come today” depends entirely on where the day already is. If the truck is heading north, Mason is straightforward. If it is working the Irish Hills, it is not.

Ring early in the morning and ask. And if your job has a fixed date — a closing, an inspection, a crew booked — say so at the start, because that takes you out of the routing logic and onto a committed slot.

Permits

Do you need one in Mason?

Not on a driveway or private land. On the street or kerb, yes — in Mason that permit comes from the City of Mason, in the property owner's or contractor's name. Streets here are narrow enough that kerbside placement is a permit conversation rather than an assumption. Permits and placement in detail →

Mason · common questions

What people in Mason ask us

Mason is in Ingham County. Which office do I ring?

The City of Mason for city streets, and the township or the Ingham County road department outside the city. A different desk from a Jackson County address. On your own driveway you need nothing at all.

I am in the blocks right around the courthouse square. Will a container fit?

Usually at the front of a drive. Those streets were platted long before roll-off trucks, drives are short and single-width, and the kerb comes up more often than people expect. Worth asking before you plan the job.

Can you deliver to a business on the square?

Yes. Access is normally through a shared rear service lane, which makes placement a conversation with the neighbours too. Short placements work much better than a container narrowing a shared lane for a week.

I am clearing an apartment above a shop. Anything special?

Stage everything at ground level first, then load in one organised pass — loading a container in dribs and drabs wastes a third of its volume. And treat the building as old: assume asbestos in floor tile, pipe wrap and mastic until tested.
