A Lenawee village on the River Raisin

Clinton is a village in Lenawee County on the River Raisin, south-east of the Irish Hills, and it has one of the better-preserved nineteenth-century main streets in this part of Michigan. For us that means a dense old core, narrow side streets and houses sitting close to the kerb line.

Placement in the village needs working out in advance. We need about sixty feet of straight run to slide a container off and roughly twenty-three feet overhead to tip it, and on a short village drive with a mature tree at the entrance neither is guaranteed. The usual answer is a position at the front of the drive, or the kerb with a Village of Clinton permit, rather than tucked round the back where you would ideally want it.

Lenawee County is a third permitting jurisdiction on top of Jackson and Washtenaw, so tell us the address and we will point you at the right office before you waste a morning.

Woollen-mill houses and what comes out of them

Clinton grew around a woollen mill, and the housing stock reflects that era: substantial nineteenth-century houses, plaster over lath, stone or early block foundations, and outbuildings that have been accumulating for a century.

Interior demolition in these houses is a weight job, not a volume job. Plaster and lath is dense and does not compact, so the container reaches its legal travelling weight long before it fills. Smaller container, planned swap — the opposite of what the size of the room suggests.

The basements add their own problem. Stone foundations in river-valley ground are damp by nature, and anything stored against them for decades has absorbed that. A basement clear-out here is almost always weight-limited, and we size it accordingly once you tell us what the storage is made of.

The river, and timing a job here

The River Raisin runs through the village, and a meaningful number of properties sit on low ground near it. That ground stays saturated well into May, long after the higher parts of the village have dried out.

For a gravel drive on the low side of town, April is not the month. Earlier in the winter, with frost in the ground, the same spot carries a loaded container without any difficulty — frozen ground is genuinely better than unfrozen gravel. Autumn is the best of all: firm ground, no heat, reliable access, and the only reason to book early is that everybody else wants the same weeks.

If you are on a paved drive none of this applies and we can come more or less whenever suits you. Say which you have when you ring; it is the question that decides the answer.

Permits

Do you need one in Clinton?

Not on a driveway or private land. On the street or kerb, yes — in Clinton that permit comes from the Village of Clinton, in the property owner's or contractor's name. Streets here are narrow enough that kerbside placement is a permit conversation rather than an assumption. Permits and placement in detail →

Clinton · common questions

What people in Clinton ask us

Clinton is in Lenawee County. Which office?

The Village of Clinton for village streets, and the township or Lenawee County for the roads beyond. That is a third jurisdiction on top of Jackson and Washtenaw, so tell us the address and we will point you at the right one.

The village streets are narrow. Where will the container go?

The front of the drive where it will take it, otherwise the kerb with a permit. We need about sixty feet of straight run and twenty-three feet overhead, and on a short village drive with a tree at the entrance neither is guaranteed.

What comes out of an old mill-era house here?

Plaster over lath, stone or early block foundations, and a century of outbuildings. Interior demolition is a weight job: smaller container, planned swap, which is the opposite of what the size of the room suggests.

I am on low ground near the River Raisin.

Then April is not the month for a gravel drive. In winter, with frost in the ground, the same spot carries a loaded container without difficulty. On a paved drive, come whenever suits you.
